Zinc Roofing in Cold Climates: Design and Durability

Zinc's impermeability makes it impervious to the freeze-thaw cycles that can damage other roofing materials. Once installed, zinc remains unfazed by low temperatures and enjoys a long life. Even when snow accumulates on zinc roofs, the surface finish remains largely unaffected. However, after particularly snowy winters, a temporary white discoloration may appear as the snow melts and reveals any retained meltwater. This discolouration gradually fades back to the normal color of zinc, although this effect is absent in finishes like elZinc Rainbow® or elZinc Advance®.

Renowned architects John Wardle Architects, with extensive experience in using zinc, faced a unique challenge in this project. They required custom-developed perforated zinc for the envisioned screens.

elZinc, supplying 1.5mm thick elZinc Slate pre-patinated zinc coils, collaborated with CASA, their Australian representative and fabrication company, to craft over 1,250 individual zinc screens. These screens, folded into 11 different profiles, included the fabrication of special screen supports.

elZinc is excited to announce the launch of one of the largest photovoltaic plants in Asturias, Spain. This solar generation facility, initially boasting a peak power capacity of 2.9 megawatts, will be comprised of over 6,500 solar panels covering an area nearly equivalent to two football fields, totaling 13,000 square meters, installed atop our factory in Asturias.

Facade Cladding

Traditional systems are fully supported metal coverings that use tried and tested hard metal seaming techniques which have been used for centuries.  The double lock standing seam, batten roll, angle seam and flat lock cladding fall into this category.  The complete elZinc® range of finishes can be installed using these common systems:

Flat Lock Shingles

Rainwater Systems

elZinc® proudly offers a range of rainwater drainage solutions which are available in five different finishes and respond to a wide range of technical and aesthetic requirements. The gutters and accessories in this range, in addition to the complementary profiles and roof flashings, are produced using elZinc® zinc titanium, which is manufactured in accordance with the requirements of standard EN988.
